And now we move away from the fruit machine concept onto more Vegas-styled slot games. Actually, the GFM site has a sister site I have more recently set up called Games & Slot Machines (dubbed 'GSM' as opposed to 'GFM'!) which concentrates solely on slot games and leaves the fruities well alone. Obviously there is some crossover but there is a fundamental different between the UK market concept of a 'fruit machine' and the Vegas concept of a 'slot machine' as you are probably well aware. You won't find the JPM or Barcrest games at GSM like you will here but the IGT and Novomatic slot games can overlap, depending on how I define their universal land-based appeal, and Aristocrat's slot machines like Queen Of The Nile and Where's The Gold would be out of place here but they fit right in over at GSM.
Anyhow, the majority of the games here have a 'free spins' feature with the exception of 'Wheel Of Wealth' which has a Wheel bonus to select a prize. Three of my favourite online-only slots here are Thunderstruck and the Immortal Romance slot by Microgaming and the amazing (but tight!) Playtech Gladiator slot with it's video graphics and unique free spins bonus feature, but you can decide by playing each of them yourself. Actually, it's fair to say that a lot of the new Barcrest fruit machines along with Astra slot games and even the Bell Fruit machines for that matter, are now learning from the Vegas-style games so you will probably find these more than familiar by now. That said, some games like Sizzling Hot Deluxe don't have any features at all and although they are 5 reel games, they are more reminiscent of the traditional fruit machines we have in the UK in look and feel.
MAME is an acronym for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. The intent of this emulator is preservation; the ability to play games is considered a 'side-effect.' MAME supports thousands of classic arcade games, although not all of them are playable. Although MAME is a 'command-line' application, as of version 0.171, you will get a simple 'DOS-like' menu when you open it where you can do the usual things of selecting games and changing the configuration. If you do not like this menu, there are a few other options: the MAMEUI port (which, as the name suggests, adds a Windows user-interface to MAME) or frontends. A lot of arcade games were coin-operated, so when you start a game you might wonder: 'how do I insert a coin?' The answer can be found in the input configuration, but let me spoil it for you: keys '5' to '8' on your keyboard insert coins for players 1-4 and keys '1' to '4' are the start-buttons for those players. So for single player, insert coin by pressing 5 and start the game by pressing 1.

Be aware that a complete collection can take a lot of disk space (over 50GB, and you need double that to extract the archive that holds all the ROMs). After downloading you can place game and BIOS ROMs in the 'roms' subfolder inside the MAME folder.

MAME handles ROMs a little different in that you do not have to unzip every individual game. MAME can open them as ZIP files. The reason for this is that arcade ROMs tend to consist of multiple files.
